Tried & True … take two!
June 5, 2008
Desipte my horrible and disasterous last baking attempt, I was inspired (or, more accurately, threatened with grievous bodily harm) to bake again.
With the fear of a riot or buring at the stake looming large, the pressure was on!
I did, though, manage to produce a beautiful moist but light chocolate cake, and I have now discovered that it can be used to hold ransom and demand favours from all those who threaten violence if a cake is not produced in a timely fashion. What favours I shall call in this season, no one knows, but at least I’m storing some cards up my sleeve for the future!
Oh, and yes, it was my original tried & true recipe, which was not altered in any way, shape or form… and that’s the only way it’s meant to be!

Picture?
And is this recipe a secret or could you be tempted to share? I could be willing to trade Lemon Blueberry drops…

Anne!
Well, the do sound delicious, however I have 3 problems -
1) I really need a recipe that I can use here in the bush, and I’m pretty sure I can’t get blueberries anywhere…so if you can trade with another recipe, I may consider it…
2) I have no form of measuring devices – cups / spoons / scales… none of it…
3) I don’t acually use a recipe for my chocolate cake….
BUT what I can do is if you can provide a suitable “bush” recipe, I’ll do the best I can to scribe my tried & true recipe for you…

Ooh, sounds like a challenge – I accept! But I feel I need a little more info before I can try to come up with a good recipe to trade – what sort of ingredients do you usually have on hand there and what sort of equipment?

Hmm, ingedients…
We have basic dry-store ingredients. Everything basic, nothing fancy. I do have vanilla… but I’m yet to stock up on spices and herbs, so we’re a little low on that front… If I need something specific I can probably get it, but not something exotic like blueberries!
We have an oven, one baking sheet, and one spring form round tin. I also have a loaf pan and small muffin tray. The only measuring implement I have is a measuring jug…
It’s a little vague, but does this help?

What sort of fruits can you get easily? And what about sweetened condensed milk (comes in a can and keeps for, like, ever, but I don’t know how ‘exotic’ it is…)?

Fruits: apples, oranges, mandarins, lemons, bananas, pineapple, mangoes (in november), pears. We can get sweetened condensed milk, and have had some in the past, but none in stock right now… but we can get… yes. Does that help?

Do you have a stove? And a large-ish stock pot?
